Well acknowledged to have been a tradition begun in Germany, the Christmas tree became widely accepted in England as people emulated the Royal Family and its custom of having a tree in their Royal apartments. By the 1870's the custom of having a traditional Christmas tree was widespread in the Americas.
In years past, Christmas trees were often cut from wild forests, but now, almost all are commercially grown on tree farms. After about 10 years of growth, they are cut and new ones planted. Various kinds of artificial trees are also able to be purchased and a lively debate takes place every year as to which is a more environmentally soun choice.
