On the banks of the Mistaya River in Banff National Park in Alberta in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a pair of snowshoes are seemingly abandoned by a winter trekker. Looking down the Mistaya Canyon cut through the ages by the river, Mount Sarbach rises in the background to its peak at 3155 metres or 10351 feet; the clouds begin to descend, partially obscuring the mountain. The Mistaya River, approximately 38 kilometers long, flows in a northwesterly direction, originating in a glacier high above Peyto Lake, a blue glacial lake, and eventually merging with the North Saskatchewan River.
