The ancient city of Arles is situated in the Bouches-du-Rhone Department in what was formerly known as the region of Provence - now known as Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France.
Situated on the banks of the Rhone River, the City of Arles dates back to 800 BC when the Ligurians had possession of the city. Later in 123 BC the Romans took control and expanded the city.
Many of the Roman and Romanesque Monuments still found in the city of Arles today date from this era and were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981.
