The town of Akaroa is located on a picturesque, sheltered harbour that is towered over by volcanic hills. The population of the town of Akaroa is about 550 permanent residents with a high percentage of those being in the seniors bracket.When summer arrives in Akaroa on the South Island of New Zealand so do the tourists that come to this resort town. The population during the summer months can rise to about 7,000 people and can cause the supply of water to diminish quickly.
Street cafes line the sidewalks in the town of Akaroa where tourists enjoy a good meal and a drink or two. French cuisine is a highlight around Akaroa as the town carries on its French traditions and cultures as this was home to many of the early French settlers.In the harbour of the town, you can get some close up photos of Hector's Dolphins which seem to enjoy the waters around Akaroa.
