The ancient Reifenstein Castle in Freienfeld or Campo di Trens in Italian, near Vipiteno (German - Sterzig) in the South Tyrol region of Italy dates back to the 12th century. It is located above a now dry marshland area in the Eisack-Isarco river valley.It is possible when Reifenstein Castle, in Italy, was first built the marshland could have been under water forming a lake or stream, therefore giving the castle a natural fortification against intruders.Reifenstein Castle is known to the Italian speaking population of the South Tyrol as Castel Tasso. This name probably comes from the fact that at one time the ancient castle was the property of a well-known German family called Thurn and Taxis.
