If 'the eyes are the windows of the soul', so conversely it seems that 'windows are the eyes of a city'.
In the city of Volterra, Tuscany in Italy, there are many styles of windows, one of them being the barred window. The bars can be for decoration or protection, but the different designs of the ironwork is charming and the potted flowers on the sill adds interest.
Many European houses have very thick walls so between that and the small ledge on the exterior of the window there is plenty of space on the sill for a variety of colourful potted flowers and plants.
