The Basilica di San Marco, St. Mark's Basilica in English, is probably the best known church in Venice, Italy. It is situated in the Piazza San Marco, (St. Mark's Square) and is actually connected to the Doges' Palace. The first Basilica di San Marco built on the present site in 832 replaced the temporary building constructed in 828 in the Doges' Palace.
The present Basilica di San Marco in Venice, Italy dates from 1063 and the Byzantine architectural design is one of the best. Over the years the Venetians would bring back mosaics and riches from the East and the Crusades to decorate the church.
St. Mark's Basilica became so magnificent it earned the name Chiesa d'Or which means Golden Church.
