Leading invitingly into the Pacific Ocean waters, the Mesozoic rocks in this region of Canterbury on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand are a prominent feature of the coastline.
Looking back from the Kaikoura Peninsula into the bay towards the coastline, the pretty colours of sunset light the sky behind the Kaikoura Mountain Range which tower to 2,610 metres (Mount Manakau). The Kaikoura Ranges, which are made up of two parallel mountain ranges separated by the Clarence River, are actually an extension of the Southern Alps.
This region of the coastline is famous for a number of reasons but most prominently the giants of the ocean - Sperm Whales. Boat tours depart from the town of Kaikoura and head out into the rolling Pacific Ocean in search of these giants. ... continue below the picture...
