Situated on the cliffs below the the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, an old Pohutukawa Tree battles the elements. In Maori mythology, the headland is the jumping off point of maori spirits of the dead who then climb down the roots of this 800 year old tree on their journey to their homeland of Hawaiiki.
