Designed and built by Charles Garnier, the same architect who built the Paris Opera, the Monte Carlo Casino was opened in 1878. The new casino attracted important high society and soon became a fashionable place to be for the rich, since it oozed with luxury and glamour.
Prior to the opening of the casino, Monaco was the poorest state in Europe, and on the verge of bankruptcy. The Monte Carlo Casino was such a resounding success that Monaco was pulled from the brink of bankruptcy and even taxation was abolished five years after the casino opening.
The interior of this grand building is in the Belle Epoque style, decorated with lavish ornate chandeliers, marble, and gilt.
