Since 1884, the Waipapa Point Lighthouse has stood proudly on the cliffs aiding vessels in their tough journeys through these dangerous waters off the South Island of New Zealand. Made of wood, this lighthouse become automated in 1976 but still works today in keeping water vessels safe. While driving along the Southern Scenic Route in the Catlins, be sure to stop at Waipapa to view not only the historic lighthouse but the beauty of this coastal region.Waipapa Point Lighthouse along the Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail, Catlins, Southern Scenic Route, Southland, South Island, New Zealand.
