As you drive Summit Road through the Port Hills on the South Island of New Zealand, there are magnificent lookouts where you get an incredible view of the city of Christchurch. This city stretches for miles across the New Zealand landscape and from the Port Hills you can see buildings all the way to the edge of the horizon.
Christchurch is a city that was first inhabited about a thousand years ago and was officially established in 1856, making it the oldest city in New Zealand. From what was once a small village, the city of Christchurch has grown to be the largest city on the South Island with a population of around 400,000.
Summit Road winds around the top of the Port Hills and the city of Christchurch is one of the stunning views with others being Lyttelton, Sumner and Pegasus Bay. There are various places to stop on the trip throughout the Port Hills on the South Island of New Zealand and small towns that you can visit. Each view from atop the hills varies but each one displays the beautiful scenery that the South Island of New Zealand has to offer with Christchurch being a city of amazing beauty.
