Commonly today, tinsel and many types of garlands are used as decorations: glass blown into moulds, electric lights, small toys, candies and cookies, and various coloured trinkets, some handed down in families for generations. Traditions vary from family to family. Under the tree, on its skirt, could be track with a toy train merrily chugging around and in between the gifts; a Christmas village with little houses, trees and miniature figures might take an honoured place under the tree or a complete nativity scene with stable, manger and figurines of the Holy Family as well as the Shepherds, Wise Men, camels, sheep and domestic animals might be carefully arranged on the tree skirt, highlighting the religious theme in the home for the season.
