Christkindl Markets (Christmas Markets) are highlight tourist destinations found throughout Germany and Austria and particularly in Salzburg, the city also noted as the hometown of Mozart. They represent a retail tradition that goes back to the 15th Century and offer the charming European shopping experience. They are named after the Christkindl, a traditional Christmas gift giver who comes in the form of a "sprite" child. This depiction is an intended reference to the myths of children bringing gifts to the Baby Jesus, and even the Christ Child himself.
