The Royal Mosque of the Alhambra was built in 1308 in the reign of Mohammed III, but after the Christians came to Granada in Andalusia, Spain, the Iglesia del Santa Maria de la Alhambra was built. Started in 1581, from the plans of the Spanish architects Juan de Herrera and Ambrosio Vico. The Church of Saint Mary of Alhambra was not completed until 1618, 25 years after the death of de Herrera.
Designed in the Latin Cross style, the church has six chapels leading from the single nave. The simple Renaissance style of de Herrera is seen in the exterior of the Iglesia del Santa Maria, although the bell tower is quite elegant.
The interesting altarpiece was designed by Juan Lopez de Almagro in 1671, and the shell-shaped baptismal font dates back to the Nazari time (13th-15th centuries).
Bell tower of St Mary's Church, Iglesia del Santa Maria, The Alhambra (La Alhambra) - designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, City of Granada, Province of Granada, Andalusia (Andalucia), Spain, Europe.
