A wooden hut sits along the side of the road at Passo Montecroce in South Tyrol, Italy surrounded by fields of wild crocus flowers. Not only do you see beautiful crocus flowers sprouting throughout the fields along this pass, you also get a spectacular view of the snow covered Dolomite mountain range.
Early European settlers were hopeful when they saw the spring time crocus flowers as they brought hope and joy after spending cold winters in isolated shacks. The European settlers named these beautifully colored flowers as they were the first flowers to bloom each spring.
The crocus grows from corms and are hardy perennials that are found amongst woodlands, scrubs and meadows. Crocus flowers come in approximately eighty different species and their colors vary enormously with mauve, lilac, yellow and white being the more prominent ones. ... continue below the picture...
