The most common duck species in New Zealand is the Mallard Duck. Many lakes, rivers and ponds have a population of Mallard Ducks including Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park on the South Island - one of the popular breeding locations in New Zealand. The females care for their cute ducklings for 50-60 days until they fledge.
