The hippopotamus has cute eyes, small round ears and nostrils located extremely high on the roof of their skull so that they can spend hot days with a majority of their body below the surface of the water. The hippopotamus needs to stay cool in the waters of tropical rivers and prevent himself from getting a sunburn.
An adult hippopotamus does not usually float very well, so they usually propel themselves by leaps from pushing off the bottom. A young hippopotamus can stay afloat and are extremely cute as they swim by propelling themselves with kicks from their back legs.
A hippopotamus averages about 11 feet long and 5 feet tall and can weigh anywhere from 3,300 to 7,000 pounds. They are about the same size as a White Rhinoceros and have a lifespan of approximately 40 to 50 years.
