There are three information centres on the slopes of the volcanic mountain Mt Taranki (aka Mt Egmont) - namely North Egmont, East Egmont, and Dawson Falls. A variety of short walks exist in Egmont National Park from each of the information centres, however overall there are 13 entrances to the park making it one of the most accessible National Parks in New Zealand.
From the Dawson Falls Information Centre the walk to the Falls themselves takes only 10 minutes. If taking the Kapuni Loop Track, which follows the south bank of the Kapuni Stream through mountain rainforest and comes out at the top of the Dawson Falls, you should allow 1.5 hours.
The waterfall plunges 18 metres over an escarpment made up of layers of lava, pumice, gravel and ash. A steep side track also leads to the base of Dawson Falls for a different perspective of the falls and the interesting volcanic layers of the escarpment. ... continue below the picture...
