The Duomo (Cathedral) of Florence is one of the most famous sites in the city, and Florence is a place that holds many of the world's most famous pieces of art and architecture. It is a very popular tourist destination, so there are always many souvenir stands outside, like the one pictured here, selling postcards and prints of the many sites around Florence, including the Duomo of course.
Building began on the Cathedral in 1296 and most construction was completed in 1436. It is actually built on the site of a previous Cathedral; Santa Reparata, and was built in the same style as the equally famous Duomo in Siena, with a white facade with various shades of green and pink marble.
The city of Florence, especially the historic centre, where the Duomo is located is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and due to this was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. ... continue below the picture...
... This means that the centre is maintained by the World Heritage Programme and is considered to be of immense cultural importance to the heritage of the human race.
