Walking throughout Orakei Korako, an active thermal area on the North Island of New Zealand, you will be amazed when you pass by this massive rock. The rock appears as the head of an elephant, as you can see in this picture. His nose hangs over the cliff with wrinkles in the rock that seem to add to the likeness of the skin of an elephant, the ear shape on the side of his head and the indentation where his eye is located are all too eerie.
Without a doubt, this rock looks like an elephant laying on the ground as he peers over the top of a cliff to the depths below. The dampness around Orakei Korako makes the moss grow atop elephant rock as colorful vegetation encircles the rest of the area.Many people that visit Orakei Korako, New Zealand have stopped and admired this rock and had their picture taken beside it. While visiting Orakei Korako on the North island of New Zealand, along with the elephant rock, you will also see the extraordinary landscape which is made up of geysers, silica terraces, caves and mudpools. After driving 21 kilometers off the highway, you can board a boat which takes you across Lake Ohakuri to the amazing world of Orakei Korako. A trip that can be done in a couple of hours or spend the day at Orakei Korako and fully enjoy the thermal area and elephant rock.
