The Ermita de San Roque in the town of Sorbas in the Province of Andalusia in Spain is a lovely little chapel dedicated to San Roque, who was born in Montpellier, France, about 1295 and died on August 16th. 1327. Sorbas holds the San Roque Festival each year from August 14th to 17th.
Other towns and cities in Spain, Italy and France also celebrate San Roque (Italian - Rocco and French - Roch) usually during the month of August. When San Roque was twenty his parents died and he gave all his wealth to the poor, becoming a pilgrim for Rome. San Roque gave comfort for those afflicted with the plague, cholera and other diseases, and the origin of today's celebrations came from the vows and prayers made to him during the plagues and epidemics of the 15th to 17th centuries.
