The walled village of Morella in the Castellon province of Spain is home to the Gothic Church of Santa Maria la Mayor and is situated high above a lovely green valley on a rocky cliff. The location of Morella is over a 1000 meters above sea level and this was ideal in ancient times as the hill is a natural fortress. Morella saw its share of battles with many invaders.The Church of Santa Maria la Mayor in Morella, Spain is considered one of the best examples of Gothic architecture is the Valencia region. The building of the church began in the 13th century, but the elevated choir dates from the 15th century and is reached by a beautifully carved marble spiral staircase.Except for the two outstanding portals depicting the Apostles and the Virgins and the blue-tiled dome, the exterior of the Basilica de Santa Maria la Mayor is quite austere.
