A couple of Hectors Dolphins surf through the waters of Akaroa Harbour off the coast of the South Island in New Zealand. New Zealand is the only place where you will find the Hectors Dolphins which means they are restricted only to this area.Hectors Dolphins are much smaller than any other dolphins seen in the New Zealand region and are the rarest dolphins in the world. In total, there only remains approximately 3000 - 4000 of Hectors Dolphins around the South Island and a small population reside off the coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
When out on a dolphin excursion around the South Island of New Zealand you will be able to locate the Hectors Dolphins as they are the only species in these waters that have a small rounded dorsal fin. All of the other species of New Zealand dolphins have crescent shaped dorsal fins and contain more of a point to them.
