The pretty historic town of San Gimignano was founded in the third century BC by the Etruscan people. This is a name given to the people of ancient Italy and Corsica due to their culture and way of life. However, historical records of the town only date from the 10th Century.
When Catholic pilgrims made the treck to Rome and the Vatican in the Middle Ages, they often stopped of at San Gimignano along the way. This allowed the town to prosper until around 1348 when the plague swept through and wiped out most of its population.
Today it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts tourists mostly for its architecture and historic qualities. ... continue below the picture...
