I love to photograph icebergs and I love to photograph whales, getting them both into one frame was a dream for a long time. There are not too many places and times when someone is able to get a shot like this.
After photographing in Newfoundland, Canada for years I finally was able to get the shot I wanted, actually a bit more as there are actually two whales in this frame.
Both humpback whales were playing for a while, they stayed around us for some time, played a bit, dove and disappeared and came back up again after 8-12 minutes to continue playing for a bit longer. It was very difficult to predict the whales next move, especially when they dive for longer. So we decided to keep the motor idling so the whales knew where we were and just basically drifted with the tide.
After about an hour or so I finally got the shot I always was dreaming of, humpback whales showing a tail with an iceberg in the background. ... continue below the picture...
Photographed in the Atlantic Ocean of the Newfoundland Labrador coast in early summer.
