The Iglesia de San Nicolas, Church of Saint Nicholas, in Albayzin, the first settlement of Granada, in Andalusia, Spain, was built over the ruins of a mosque, as were many of the other churches in the area.
A visit to Saint Nicholas Church, the oldest church constructed in the Mozarabic style, means walking up the steep streets through Albayzin, but the view from the Mirador de San Nicolas is worth the climb. This is one of the best places to enjoy the sight of the Alhambra on the opposite hill, in all its magnificence.
Many of the streets in Albayzin are prefaced with 'Cuesta', meaning 'slope', which is self-explanatory as the community was settled on a hill, on the west side of the valley.
