Dusk sets in on the skyline of the town of San Gimignano in the province of Siena, in the Tuscany region of Italy.
San Gimignano, one of many Italian UNESCO World Heritage sites, is a small medieval hill town located in the province of Siena in north-central Italy. Siena is located within the picturesque region of Tuscany.
San Gimignano is mostly known for its architecture, and most notably as you can see from the picture, the tall medieval towers that can be seen for kilometers around.
The town of San Gimignano once had 72 towers standing. They were not only a symbol of wealth for the various families that built them, but were also used as lookout towers for the approaching enemy and as stations for which to pour boiling oil on the enemys' heads. ... continue below the picture...
... Once the town was hit by the plague in the 14th century, most of the towers fell down due to lack of upkeep and events such as natural disasters.
Since it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is protected by the World Heritage Programme as a city that holds an important place in the preservation of humanity.
