San Gimignano is a small medieval walled town in the Siena Province, in Tuscany, which is a region in Italy. It is not very well known, but does hold a small place in Italy's cultural history.
The poet Folgore da San Gimignano was born there in 1270. He was known mostly for describing Italian hunting scenes and gives historians a glimpse into what life was like for someone living there during that time.
E.M.Forster fictionalized a version of San Gimignano in his novel 'Where Angels Fear to Tread'.
The towers were an inspiration for the University of Essex in England.
In the John Grisham novel 'The Broker' the main character takes his second wife on a vacation there for a month.
The film 'Tea with Mussolini' was partly filmed in San Gimignano.
