Photo: Killer Whale Fluke

A killer whale showing off its' fluke as it plays in the calm waters of Johnstone Strait in British Columbia, Canada.

A killer whale displays his fluke as he rolls around in the waters of Johnstone Strait in British Columbia, Canada. The water shimmers in the sunlight from the upward motion of the Orca's fluke. The fluke of a killer whale is made up of thick tissue which contains no bones or cartilage.

During some whale watching trips in the Northern Vancouver Island area, you may be fortunate enough to see some typical killer whale behaviour such as spy hopping, breaching and slapping the water with their tail fluke.
