Seeing Killer Whales in their natural environment is a thrill in itself, but nothing is more picturesque than watching Killer Whales surface off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada as the sunset hues highlight the region. The scenery is breathtaking as the sky has a bright yellow glow across the horizon, becoming darker in color in the foreground as the sun hides behind the clouds, peeking through when it can.
The yellow colors reflect off the calm water, as four Killer Whales surface in the foreground, two of them being females. Their small pointed dorsal fins glisten in the sunlight as they dive below the surface, while the mist from one blowhole sparkles in the lighting as the Killer Whale comes up for air. The fourth Killer Whale shows off the rounded part of his head as the small bubbles surround his blowhole.
A sunset like this is quite common in the summer months off Northern Vancouver Island, but there are not always Killer Whales surfacing to make this picture complete. ... continue below the picture...
... The scenery is always beautiful around the area and the Killer Whales are spotted quite regularly in the summer months right through until the fall. The waters become rougher as the weather cools off and the Killer Whales make their way back up the coast with very few sightings until their return the next year.
There is nothing more beautiful than watching the Killer Whales appear out of nowhere, when the waters are calm and a sunset fills the sky. The sound of their blows can be heard for quite a distance when other boats have gone home for the evening. Watching Killer Whales off Northern Vancouver Island should be an experience everyone should have at least once in a lifetime.
