Situated along the Kauri Coast in Northland, Waipoua Forest plays host to some of the largest kauri trees in New Zealand. These large trees were plundered for their precious timber for furniture, boat and house building, and for export. The Kauri tree was all but lost until it's protection during the mid 1900's, but only small tracts of old growth kauri tree remained.
