Looking across a field of lavender at the peak of flowering, a visitor is presented with a blanket of purple. Purple spikes of Lavandula x intermedia waving about on the end of stalks.In New Zealand the Lavender is generally harvested in January, and the oil is extracted by way of distillation. Lavandula x intermedia "Grosso" is one of the best varieties for extracting the oil. The essential oils are used in hand and body lotions, soaps, and sprays.
