Many who visit the resort town of Queenstown also know Lake Wakatipu and the vintage steamboat the TSS Earnslaw which plies the waters of the lake carrying tourists on scenic cruises from the town for views of the Remarkables mountain range.
Fewer people tend to travel to the lake's extremities where the Central Otago scenery is equally as beautiful. The pebbly shores at rest areas make for a surreal setting.
Although Lake Wakatipu is only the third largest lake in New Zealand at 291 sq kilometres (112 sq miles) of surface area it is the longest at 80 kilometres (50 miles) long. It's a very deep lake and it's floor is said to be around 100 metres (328 feet) below sea level. The Dart River flows into Lake Wakatipu while the Kawarau River drains the lake from the Frankton Arm which is near Queenstown.
