A lake with no outlet, Mono Lake is heavy in minerals which are washed down into the basin. Fresh water and the alkaline lake water mix and over time, actually many years, the deposits help to form the tufa spires and knobs.
Mono Lake is a photographers heaven with lake reflections, the tufa towers themselves, desert and mountain scenes in the background. The weather also plays a vital role and no two days are the same.
In this picture, the reflections of the tufa tower are interrupted by the disturbance on the water surface which would otherwise look like a mirror image.
