Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada is surrounded by a mountainous landscape, tranquility and various types of wildlife. During the summer months, the Killer Whales visit the waters off Northern Vancouver Island where they follow the salmon run and come to rub on the beaches of Robson Bight.
On this particular warm, summer day, while on a whale watching excursion, a male Killer Whale surfaced near the boat giving us a beautiful show of his tall dorsal fin and black and white body. While surfacing, the mist from his blowhole lingers above the whale and sparkles in the light of the day.
Dorsal fins on a male Killer Whale can grow up to six feet in height, while the females fins only reach about four feet. This is an easy way for whale watchers to tell the difference between adult whales and helpful for the researchers who study these animals off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. ... continue below the picture...
