A long line of flags hang on the exterior of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria with the Cyprus flag being one of them. This flag first came into effect in August of 1960 when a constitution was passed and Cyprus was announced as an independent state.
The yellow markings on the Cyprus flag represent the island itself with two branches belonging to the olive tree placed underneath. The branches and the white background are symbols meaning peace and Cyprus is the only flag that has its region placed on it.
Before this design of the flag was put into effect, which came about in a competition for varied designs, the two flags representing Greece and Turkey were used. The colors of red and blue were not allowed to be included on the Cyprus flag or any resemblance to a cross or a crescent. Each flag that is displayed outside of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria represents a different region from around the world and it is a welcoming sight to see when touring through Vienna. Each color on the international flags blend in beautifully with the others and tourists are always taking pictures of the line of flags or trying to capture snap shots of ones they have singled out.
