Deep winter along the James Dalton Highway in the Brooks Range of Alaska sees the mountainous landscape carpeted in snow and the surface of the road itself icy and slippery.
Often during the long winter months, the James Dalton Highway is blocked by snow drifts which can take workers many hours to clear and allow traffic through.
It's definitely a road where you have to be prepared for all emergency situations! While waiting for the road to be cleared vehicles, including the many trucks which use the Haul Road must queue with engines idling. It's a good idea then to have plenty of spare fuel on board as a contingency as there is nothing but white wilderness between Fairbanks and Coldfoot, then from Coldfoot to Prudhoe Bay.
