San Gimignano is a town that is steeped in history, and is mostly visited by tourists today for its quaintness and medieval architecture.
The towers that you can see in the photograph are well known in architectural circles, mainly because they are still standing. Today San Gimignano is known as 'San Gimignano dalle belle torri' - San Gimignano with the beautiful towers.
Unlike the bigger nearby towns of Florence and Bologna, who lost most of their towers during wars, natural disasters or urbanisation, San Gimignano still has 14 towers standing. In the 13th century, when the town was flourishing, 72 towers stood, but an impressive number of those still remain.
Visitors to the city describe touring the town like stepping back in time. The entire appearance of the town has a medieval feel to it, due to not only the architecture but also to the layout, which uses the ancient plan of building around public squares. ... continue below the picture...
Today San Gimignano is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
