The Basilica di San Marco domes in Venice, Italy are usually seen from inside the Basilica and the wonderful decoration can be admired gazing upward.
However, of one takes the elevator to the top of the Campanile di San Marco (the bell tower) this outstanding view of the San Marco domes and the surrounding city of Venice, Italy gives a different aspect of the Basilica di San Marco.
The Pentecost Dome seen in the forefront is possibly the oldest dome dating from around the middle of the 12th century. The centre dome is the Ascension Dome, the painting inside the Basilica depicts Christ's rise to Heaven. The intricate sculptured work around the roof and the glimpse of the portals is proof the Basilica di San Marco in Venice is one of the most outstanding buildings in the world.
