A region of coastal contrasts from the dramatic rocky cliffs of Cabo de Gata to soft sandy beaches of villages such as Playa de San Miguel. Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata is a protected coastal strip of great ecological wealth and beauty, protecting the coastline and nearby wetlands.
Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Nijar (as it's also known) covers an area of 33,660 hectares - reaching from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea including various fishing villages such as San Miguel, San Jose etc to swamp and marshlands situated near the coast, to the arid interior of the park.
The park is also an important stop over for many migrating birds such as flamingoes, avocets, griffon vultures, and Dupont's larks.
