The historic St Katherine's Church, or Katharinenkirche as it's known in German, is dedicated to the saint, Catherine of Alexandria, and can be found near the famous plaza Hauptwache in downtown Frankfurt, Hessen. The church is an excellent example of baroque style architecture, and was built between 1678 and 1681. Tragically, it was destroyed in 1944 due to bombing by the Allieds during World War II - it was then rebuilt between 1950 and 1954, once the war had ended.
As you can see from the photograph, from the blurred lights of all the traffic going by this church is in a very busy part of town. It is surrounded by buildings much newer than the church, but the beauty of St Katherine's Church, and the history surrounding it, make it stand out as a place of worship and a historic monument today.

... and the fifth largest city in Germany. Aside from the church it has some of the most fascinating sites to visit in Germany - including the Frankfurt Opera House, the Hauptwache (which was once a prison), and the Zeil, (Frankfurt's main shopping street) which St Katherine's Church actually sits at one end of.
