The Barbary Macaque which is also known as the Barbary Ape is actually a true monkey rather than an ape.
It is thought that the population of Barbary Macaques found on the Rock of Gibraltar were introduced as the species is found at home in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria. They have become a major tourist attraction for the small slice of the United Kingdom - Gibraltar.
Gibraltar, which occupies an area of 6.84 square kilometres, is found at the southernmost tip of Spain (Iberian Peninsula) along the Costa del Sol. It is a British overseas territory which is independently governed. A border crossing is necessary in order to enter Gibraltar from Spain.
