The octagonal tower, built of white stone, is part of the Alcazar, the Spanish castle - most cities in Spain have their own version of a palace or fortress that was built to protect the towns from attackers. Now they are popular tourist attractions and proud monuments to Spain's history.
This castle is located in the town of Jerez de la Frontera, which is a municipality in the province of Cadiz. It is the largest city in the province, and was first founded around 1030. It first began as an independent state, until it was united to the bigger kingdom of Arcos, and then in 1053, was joined with Sevilla - it has an extensive history of being a small area that was acquired by others to form a large municipality.
The Costa de la Luz, where the city of Jerez de la Frontera is located, means 'Coast of Light' and is a popular tourist destination along the Andalusian coast, for both foreign visitors and Spaniards alike. ... continue below the picture...
