Many of these masks and the characters they are representative of are deeply rooted in Venetian history.
While walking the streets of Venice there is an abundance of Venetian masks on sale in the market stalls. There are also artists to watch while they produce a work of art by creating a mask and painting it elaborately.
The wearing of Venetian masks dates back many centuries and were used to protect the identity of the wearer during decadent activities such as gambling, and other indiscretions such as promiscuity.
