The city of Vielha is the capital of the Vall d'Aran, or the Aran Valley which is situated at the northwestern edge of Catalonia in Spain. There is a unique feeling to the Vall d'Aran and Vielha, an architectural harmony of the slate roofs and dormer windows of the Vielha houses with the surrounding lush grass and trees.The inhabitants of Vielha in Spain, mainly speak Aranes which is a Gascon French dialect. Vielha goes back to the Roman times when it was called Vetula. Legend has it that the giant known as Mandronius made his home here and fought against the Romans.The church of Sant Miqueu in Vielha, Catalonia, has architectural styles from the 12th to 18th century. The main portal being 13th century and the landmark bell-tower dates from the 14th century.The Museu dera Val d'Aran, the Aran Valley Museum, is definitely worth visiting to understand the history of the area.
