Photo: Vltava River Prague Czech Republic

Standing on the Charles Bridge in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, you can see the Vltava River flowing past the city buildings.

The Vltava River flows for miles through the Czech Republic and as you stand atop the Charles Bridge in the city of Prague, this is the section of the river that is seen. Known as the longest river in the Czech Republic, it stretches for approximately 430 kilometers and joins into the Elbe at Melnik.

Historic buildings sit along the banks of the river in Prague and another bridge crosses over the Vltava farther downstream from the Charles Bridge. In the 1950's a few dams were built along the Vltava River but in 2002, a flood caused the death of several people and there was a great deal of damage done.

Tourist boats run up and down the river which makes crossing from one side to the other fairly easy and gives one a different perspective of the area. This is a great way to see the best parts of the city of Prague and trips are available during the day and at night.

One of the great sights ... continue below the picture...

... to see while on a boat trip on the Vltava River is the Vyshehrad Castle and while slowly making your way back to your destination, music is playing, drinks are available and on the longer trips there are meals. Summer months offer day trips down the Vltava River which take you as far down as the Slapy Dam which is twenty kilometers south of the city of Prague.

While visiting the city of Prague in the Czech Republic, take one of these boat tours and get the real feeling of being on the Vltava River. If staying on land is more up your alley, be sure to cross the Charles Bridge and take time out to enjoy the beauty of the Vltava River and the surrounding area.
