A diverse range of industries define the town of Whakatane which include tourism, dairy farming, forestry, manufacturing, fishing, and horticulture. The town services smaller centres in the Bay Plenty such as Kawerau, Opotiki, Whangaparaoa, just to name a few.
Whakatane is also considered the gateway to White Island, the most active volcano in New Zealand.
