Kiwifruit is actually the berry of the woody vine Actinidia deliciosa; it is just a much larger berry than most other plants produce. It used to be called Chinese gooseberry, but was renamed to Kiwifruit in the 1950s after the flightless bird, the Kiwi, which is the national symbol of New Zealand.
