Fathom Five National Marine Park is Canada's first National Marine Conservation area and preserves a legacy of lighthouses as well as 22 shipwrecks; the islands within the Park were all formed of a limestone created in a warm, shallow sea some 400 million years ago, much like the Gulf of Mexico today.
Accessible by boat from Tobermoray, Flowerpot Island is part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park on Lake Huron and because of the islands' separation from each other and from the mainland, a unique combination of animals and plants evolved on each of the islands. Dense forests and flower-filled meadows all surrounded by clear, clean water combine to make a visitor's stay both pleasant and interesting.
Many caves stand some 20 metres (about 65 feet) above Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, very interesting geological structures and well-visited tourist attractions.

Hiking the trails will bring the visitor through forests to a cave, passing by flowerpot seastacks and to Flowerport Island coastguard Lighthouse in the island's northeast corner. It was built on Castle Bluff in 1897 and in 1969 was replaced by a modern steel tower. The Lighthouse has been guiding shipping through a busy shipping lane for over a century and the 100 year old lighthouse keeper's home, now a museum, is open for cold drinks, tours and souvenirs.
